PHOENIX (Sept. 11, 2025) – For nearly half a century, Laura Nasser stood on her feet as a hairdresser, helping others feel their best. But while she was caring for her clients, she struggled with her own health. Persistent heavy, achy legs made daily life increasingly difficult. She assumed it was just part of getting older until she finally sought help.

This September, during National Vascular Disease Awareness Month, The CORE Institute is spotlighting its comprehensive vein health program, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease. For patients like Nasser, lasting relief came through Interventional Radiologist Dr. Jon Marshall and the specialized team at The CORE Institute in Phoenix.

An ultrasound revealed that the valves in several of Nasser’s leg veins were no longer functioning properly, causing blood to pool and increasing her discomfort. Three diseased veins required closure to prevent further damage. “Dr. Marshall came in and told me what he was going to do, and it just went so smoothly,” Nasser said. “I had no pain whatsoever. He was very knowledgeable and did a great job. I actually looked forward to the next procedure. Everybody there was so nice. This group in the vein clinic is amazing.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vein issues in the leg are common. More than 30 million Americans such as Nasser suffer from vein disease. If left untreated, it could cause disabling pain, skin problems and possibly open sores.

Since her procedures, Nasser reports her legs already feel lighter and stronger. “It takes a while for veins to fully reroute, but I feel so much better,” she said. “I’ll have a follow-up in three months to see if there’s more to do. The results have been amazing, and I’d recommend this clinic to anyone.”

Dr. Marshall has performed countless vein procedures, helping thousands of patients find relief. Interestingly, he has also undergone treatment himself. “We see patients with symptoms like varicose veins, leg swelling, heaviness, or restless legs. The procedure closes diseased veins, so blood flows the right way again. I’ve had it done multiple times, and it changed my life,” he said. “So when I recommend it, it’s not just as a physician, but as someone who’s lived it.”

For Dr. Marshall, successful treatment is about more than just medical outcomes. “We see patients multiple times during their care, so we get to know them,” he said. “My staff makes the process seamless, and I get to connect with patients personally. It’s not just, ‘We fixed your veins.’ It’s, ‘We care about you as a person.’ That’s what I love about this work.”
