Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Damon Adamany discusses the rise in pickleball-related injuries and how patients can recover safely and return to play
PHOENIX (Oct. 28, 2025) – Dr. Damon Adamany, an orthopedic surgeon at The CORE Institute, and a pickleball player himself, is actively treating patients suffering from falls and fractures related to the sport.
“The most common types of injuries are falls, which can lead to sprained or broken wrists,” said Dr. Adamany. “I’ve treated some very significant wrist fractures, and in some cases, these can be life-changing injuries if they’re not treated promptly.”
While younger athletes are beginning to play more competitively, most patients he treats for pickleball injuries are over 50 years old. “As we get older, coordination becomes more difficult, and that’s one of the reasons many older players are more prone to falls and injuries,” he said. “But I’m also seeing more younger players coming in with similar problems. Phoenix has great weather almost year-round, so it’s not surprising the game has really taken off here.”
Depending on the severity, treatment for these injuries can range from non-surgical solutions to complex operations. “We’ll always start with X-rays,” explained Dr. Adamany. “Sometimes, if things aren’t improving or if we suspect ligament damage that doesn’t show up on X-rays, we’ll order an MRI. Simple sprains can usually be managed with rest and rehab, but many fractures require surgery. In those cases, we use plates and screws to stabilize and realign the bones.” Recovery time varies from a few weeks for mild sprains to six months or more for severe fractures.
Dr. Adamany also underscored the importance of prevention. “Pickleball is a wonderful sport. It keeps people moving and engaged, which is exactly what we want for our patients,” he said. “But our competitive spirit doesn’t always match what our body is capable of as we get older. If you think the ball is too much of a stretch to go after, let it go. Secure your shoelaces, wear supportive shoes, and make sure you’re drinking plenty of water under the Arizona sun. Those small steps can make a big difference in avoiding a serious injury.”
For Dr. Adamany and the team at The CORE Institute, the focus is always on helping patients get back to the activities they love. “The spirit of the game is something we don’t want people to lose,” he said. “Our goal is to keep people healthy, active, and in motion, so they can keep enjoying activities they love.”
