Fellowship Description:

The CORE Institute Trauma Fellowship is a 1-year program accredited by the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) in partnership with faculty from the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix.

Operative Experience: Fellows spend approximately 4 days a week in the operating room, primarily at Banner University Medical Center. Additional opportunities exist at Banner Desert Medical Center and the CORE Specialty Hospital. The fellowship offers a unique benefit of allowing the only trauma fellow to choose cases from a diverse range, covering upper and lower extremities, pelvis/acetabulum, and addressing non-union, malunion, and infections. Fellows gain hands-on experience with staff supervision, and autonomy increases throughout the year based on competency and case complexity. Fellows typically log over 1000 CPT codes annually, well surpassing OTA requirements.

Non-Trauma Exposure: Fellows have the chance to participate in non-trauma cases such as arthroplasty, upper extremity procedures, and sports-related surgeries. Each trauma surgeon has an elective practice, providing additional opportunities for involvement.

Clinic: Fellows attend a minimum of half a clinic day per week following OTA guidelines. Clinic exposure includes learning indications for surgery, post-operative rehabilitation protocols, and management.

Call: Fellows participate in fellow call one weekend per month and one day per week. As competency progresses, fellows may transition to independent call in the second half of the program.

Research: Fellows are expected to complete a research project during the fellowship, presenting results at the University of Arizona Orthopaedic Research Day. Research support is provided for ethics board applications and study start-up.

Education: Educational activities include daily trauma rounds, Thursday morning didactic orthopaedic lectures, monthly journal club meetings, trauma fellow journal club/case discussions, quarterly grand rounds by visiting professors, and quarterly cadaver labs. These activities contribute to a well-rounded educational experience for trauma fellows.

Phoenix is one of the fastest growing cities in America, with 300+ days of sun per year, a celebrated food scene, world class outdoor activities, including prestigious golf courses, hiking and more. Phoenix is well located for travel, with a large, centrally located airport that serves as a hub for multiple airlines, and is just a few hours’ drive from many scenic destinations including Sedona, Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Moab, Monuments Valley, Antelope Canyon and more.

Applicants must have completed an accredited orthopaedic surgery residency program in the Unites States or Canada, be board-eligible or board-certified, and be able to obtain an Arizona state medical license before the fellowship begins.
